WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Burgess Owens (UT-04) helped reintroduce Rep. Brian Mast’s (FL-18) Ceasing Age-Based (CAB) Trucking Restrictions Act, which would eliminate unnecessary red tape and restrictions to allow more truckers to keep the nation’s supply chain flowing.
“America’s supply chain is in crisis,” said Rep. Owens. “Struggling businesses in Utah and across the nation require immediate action to ease these harmful disruptions and rebound from key product shortages. The CAB 18 Act removes burdensome regulations on the trucking industry and revitalizes the supply chain by getting the government out of the way and returning truckers to the road. I am proud to support this commonsense legislation and look forward to working alongside my colleagues to get it through the House.”
While many states allow truckers between the ages of 18 to 20 to transport within a state, federal law requires that a trucker be at least 21 to transport across state boundaries. Picking up goods from a port is interpreted as interstate transportation even if the port is in the same state as the distribution center or the final location. This means 18 to 20-year-olds cannot transport cargo coming off of ships at overloaded ports, even if they have a commercial driver’s license and drive semi-trucks elsewhere within their state.
